Floral Industry Legislative Issues - General Issues

Foliage coming into the United States from the European Union (EU) will continue to arrive duty-free after the U.S. and the EU announced May 6 that they reached an agreement in the long-running dispute over hormone treated beef.

The agreement "in principle," according to the USTR, would give the U.S. increased duty-free access to the EU market for U.S. beef produced from cattle that have not been treated with growth-promoting hormones.  In return, the U.S. will not impose new sanctions on a list of products exported from the EU to the U.S. including foliage and a variety of other products such as meats, cheeses, juices and mineral water.

Had an agreement not been reached, Italian ruscus could have doubled in cost on May 9 due to a proposed 100 percent duty.

This is a four-year agreement, and the USTR says the two sides will negotiate a longer agreement "before the end of the four-year period."
